Admissions & Enrollment

What are the requirements to enroll at William Edge Institute?

How do I apply?

You can apply online through our Apply Now page or visit the campus in person. We also recommend scheduling a tour so you can meet our instructors, see the salon floor, and get all your questions answered face to face.

When do classes start?

We offer multiple start dates throughout the year. Contact our admissions office at 830-387-4094 or book a tour to find out the next available enrollment date for your program.

What happens during orientation?

Your first week covers orientation — you’ll learn the campus layout, school policies, professional expectations, and start getting to know your classmates and instructors. You’ll receive your professional kit on day three. Make sure to wear closed-toe, closed-heel shoes from the start.

What programs does William Edge Institute offer?

We offer three TDLR-approved programs:

  • Cosmetology — 1,000 clock hours (~8 months full-time)
  • Esthetician — 750 clock hours (~6 months full-time)
  • Manicure — 600 clock hours (~5 months full-time)

What is the weekly schedule?

Full-time students attend approximately 30 hours per week. Your exact schedule will be provided during enrollment. This pace allows most students to complete their program within the estimated timeframes listed above.

Is William Edge Institute an Aveda school?

Yes! We are an Aveda partner institute — one of the things that sets us apart. Our students learn with Aveda’s plant-based, cruelty-free product line and follow Aveda’s curriculum, which is recognized industry-wide for its quality and environmental commitment.

What do esthetician students learn?

Our esthetician program covers facials, waxing, and plant-based skin treatments using Aveda’s skincare line. Students gain hands-on experience with real clients in our campus salon. The program focuses on holistic, plant-based approaches to skincare.

Will I work on real clients?

Yes. Once you’ve completed your foundational training, you’ll work on real clients in our campus salon as part of your clinical hours. This is where you build the confidence and speed you’ll need in a professional setting.

Tuition & Financial Aid

How much does each program cost?

  • Cosmetology: $13,500 tuition + $1,900 (plus tax) for supplies and kit
  • Esthetician: $10,125 tuition + $1,600 (plus tax) for supplies and kit
  • Manicure: $6,200 tuition + $1,200 (plus tax) for supplies and kit

Do you offer financial aid?

Will I have to take out student loans?

No. William Edge Institute follows a debt-free philosophy — we do not participate in federal student loan programs. Many students cover their tuition entirely through Pell Grants and other aid, graduating without any student debt. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Do you accept VA benefits?

Yes. We are approved for veterans’ education benefits including Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35, DEA). Contact our admissions team to learn how to use your benefits.

Is Texas Workforce Commission funding available?

Yes. Students may qualify for funding through the Texas Workforce Commission. Contact our financial aid office or your local Workforce Solutions office for eligibility details.

Licensing & Exams

What license will I earn?

After completing your program, you’ll be eligible to sit for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) licensing exam for your field — Cosmetology, Esthetics, or Manicure. Passing the exam earns you a state license to practice professionally in Texas.

What does the licensing exam involve?

The TDLR licensing exam has two parts:

  • Written (Theory) Exam — a multiple-choice test covering sanitation, safety, Texas laws, and your area of specialty. You must pass the theory exam before you can take the practical.
  • Practical Exam — a hands-on demonstration where you perform services on a mannequin. For cosmetology, this includes tasks like applying foils, sanitizing your hands, and demonstrating proper technique under timed conditions.

How much do the exams cost?

  • Permit fee: $25
  • Theory (written) exam: $55
  • Practical exam: $76
  • License fee: $50

Total exam and licensing fees are approximately $206.

What is the hardest part of the licensing exam?

Most students say the theory (written) exam is the hardest part. That’s why we dedicate significant time to exam preparation — including practice tests, review sessions, and study guides — so you walk in confident on test day.

Does the school help me prepare for the licensing exam?

Absolutely. Exam prep is built into every program. You’ll take practice tests, review key concepts, and run through timed practical scenarios so there are no surprises when exam day arrives.

Career & Salary

How much do cosmetologists make in Texas?

Entry-level cosmetologists in Texas typically earn between $21,000 and $41,438 per year, with hourly rates starting around $13 to $19.92. The average cosmetologist salary in Texas is approximately $52,650 per year as you gain experience and build your clientele.

What careers can I pursue after graduating?

Your options go well beyond just working behind the chair. Graduates pursue careers as:

  • Salon stylist or salon owner
  • Esthetician or skincare specialist
  • Nail technician
  • Makeup artist
  • Educator or cosmetology instructor
  • Brand representative or product educator
  • Spa manager
  • Freelance or bridal specialist

Does the school help with job placement?

Yes. We offer placement assistance to help graduates connect with salons, spas, and employers in the area. We also maintain an Employment Board with current job opportunities.

Is beauty school worth the investment?

For most students, yes. With tuition starting at $6,200 (manicure) and financial aid potentially covering a large portion of the cost, many graduates see a return on their investment within months of starting work. Beauty careers also offer flexibility, creativity, and strong long-term earning potential — especially for those who build a loyal client base or open their own business.
