Direct answer: A clock hour is one hour of supervised instruction at a TDLR-licensed school. Texas licenses beauty professionals by hours, not semesters: 1,000 hours for Cosmetology, 750 for Esthetics, and 600 for Manicure. Schools track your hours and report them to TDLR every month, and you become eligible for your state exams once your required hours are complete. At William Edge Institute, full-time students earn 30 hours a week.
Colleges measure progress in credit hours. Most beauty schools, including William Edge Institute, measure it in clock hours: actual time in class, in theory, and on the clinic floor. TDLR allows both systems, and for schools that use credits it sets a conversion of 1 credit hour = 37.5 clock hours. Either way, the state wants the same thing: proof that you spent the required time learning.
TDLR rules let schools track hours with a time clock and daily attendance records. The school keeps those records and submits your accrued hours to the state electronically each month. That monthly report is why attendance matters so much: your hours are not a guess at the end of the program, they’re a running total the state can see.
When your hours are complete, the school certifies them, TDLR makes you eligible to test, and your eligibility is sent to PSI, the testing company. TDLR says to allow 24 to 48 hours after your hours are reported for eligibility to reach PSI. From there, you schedule your written theory exam first, then the practical. We run a full-time schedule of 30 hours a week, Tuesday through Saturday. There’s no part-time track, which is exactly what keeps programs short.
| Program | Required hours | At 30 hrs/week |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetology | 1,000 | About 34 weeks |
| Esthetics | 750 | About 25 weeks |
| Manicure | 600 | About 20 weeks |

Every part of the program counts: theory lessons, hands-on practice on mannequins, and servicing real guests on the student salon floor under licensed supervision. For Cosmetology students, the first ten weeks are theory and hands-on practice Tuesday through Saturday; from week 11, Tuesday and Wednesday are theory and Thursday through Saturday you’re on the clinic floor. More on that in What to Expect on the Student Salon Floor.
Because your license depends on a fixed number of hours, a missed day doesn’t disappear. It gets added to the end. Miss a week and you graduate a week later, test a week later, and start earning a week later. Students who protect their attendance are the ones who finish on schedule.
Federal aid follows hours too. Pell Grants are hours-based and per-program: Pell Grant aid of up to $8,217 for Cosmetology students who qualify, up to $6,163 for Esthetics, and up to $4,930 for Manicure. Your actual award depends on your FAFSA results. Details in Pell Grants for Beauty School.
