A typical day as a cosmetology student at William Edge Institute starts with theory and transitions to hands-on salon floor training where you work on real guests. You will spend roughly 6 hours on campus, learning everything from color theory and hair science to cutting techniques and professional client communication — all using Aveda’s plant-based, cruelty-free products.
No two days are exactly the same, which is one of the reasons students love beauty school. Here is what a real day at WEI looks like.
Most days begin with theory instruction. This is where you learn the science and knowledge behind the services you will perform on the salon floor.
Theory is not just book work. Instructors connect every concept to what you will do on the salon floor. When you learn about hair porosity in the morning, you will see exactly how it affects color absorption when you apply foils that afternoon.
After classroom time, you move to the salon floor. This is where beauty school gets exciting.
WEI’s guest services are open to the public, which means you are not just practicing on mannequins all day. You are working on real guests — real consultations, real haircuts, real color services, real styling.
Before you touch a guest, you have already practiced the technique during classroom demonstrations and mannequin work. By the time a guest sits in your chair, you have the foundation to deliver a quality service under instructor supervision.
Every service you perform earns you hours toward your 1,000-hour requirement. The more guests you work with, the faster your skills develop and the more confident you become.
Your first few days at WEI are focused on orientation and foundation building. You learn your way around the campus, meet your instructors and classmates, and start building the core knowledge you will use every day.
You receive your professional kit on day 3 — this is your personal set of tools including shears, combs, brushes, clips, and other essentials. From that point on, you are working with professional-grade equipment every day.
During week 1, you will start with fundamentals: how to hold your shears correctly, basic sectioning, shampooing techniques, and sanitation protocols. It builds quickly from there.
William Edge Institute is an Aveda partner school, which means everything you learn is grounded in Aveda’s philosophy of plant-based, cruelty-free beauty. The products you train with are the same ones used in high-end Aveda salons across the country.
This matters because when you graduate and walk into an Aveda salon for a job interview, you already know the product line. You know how the color system works. You know how to talk about ingredients with clients who care about what goes on their hair and skin.
Even if you do not end up at an Aveda salon, the training translates. You learn to work with premium products and develop an attention to quality that sets you apart.
WEI has a dress code that mirrors what you would see in a professional salon. Expect to wear all black and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes. Looking professional is part of the training — you are building habits that carry into your career.
When you leave campus, the learning does not stop completely. Theory review, practice on mannequins at home, and studying for quizzes and exams are all part of the process.
The program runs 30 hours per week, which leaves time for study, a part-time job, and personal life. Most students find that consistent daily review — even 20 to 30 minutes — keeps them on track without feeling overwhelmed.
The cosmetology program is 8 months. The esthetician program is 6 months. The manicure program is about 5 months. That means the intensity is high, but the duration is short. You can see the finish line from day one.
At William Edge Institute, students attend approximately 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, for a total of 30 hours per week. The cosmetology program is 1,000 hours completed over 8 months at this pace.
Yes. WEI’s guest services are open to the public, so students perform real services — haircuts, color, styling, facials, and waxing — on real guests under instructor supervision. This hands-on experience is one of the most valuable parts of beauty school training.
At WEI, you receive your professional kit on day 3, which includes the tools you need for the program. You will need closed-toe, closed-heel shoes and professional attire (typically all black). A notebook and pen for theory classes are also essential. The school provides Aveda products for salon floor training.
Reading about a day in the life is helpful, but nothing compares to seeing it firsthand. Book a tour at William Edge Institute in New Braunfels to watch students in action on the salon floor, meet the instructors, and feel the energy of the campus.
